General information: Ghana formed the heart of the ancient Ashanti kingdom. The current boundaries are a union of the former British colony of Gold Coast, and part of the former U.N. trust territory ofTogoland.
The coastal regions comprise low lying plains, the Volta Delta, and diverse lagoons, and swamp land. The inner regions are mainly wooded hills. The country is bounded by C'ote D'lvoire, Togo, and Burkina Faso.
Exports: Gold, diamonds, manganese, bauxite, coffee, timber. Cocoa the main export crop accounts for 15% of world output.
Imports: Food, fuels, machinery, and general manufactured goods.
