General information: Located on the West African coast Gambia is a narrow strip of land divided by the Gambia River. The river carries most of the tiny country's trade, with ships of up to 3,000 tonnes being able to reach Georgetown. The deepwater harbour at Banjul is one of the best on the West African Coast.
Gambia has been a liberal democracy since independence in 1965.
