The landscape is dominated by rugged mountains and the Danakil Desert. Rainfall is restricted to September. Droughts are common.
The Red Sea coast provides potential both in tourism, and for port facilities for landlocked neighbours.
Mining: Australian companies are prospecting for gold, and a number of American companies are involved in oil exploration. The mining industry has considerable potential.
